When Should Children Have Eye Exams?

The American Optometric Association recommends the following schedule for children’s eye exams:

  • A comprehensive exam between 6 and 12 months to establish a baseline
  • Another comprehensive exam between the ages of 3 and 5 as they grow and develop
  • Annual, comprehensive exams starting before 1st grade and continuing into adulthood

Good vision is key to your child’s success, both academically and in life. In addition to seeing clearly at school, strong visual skills are crucial for social, cognitive, and motor skill development.

The Importance of Visual Skills

Children aren’t born with all the visual skills they need—they develop them gradually, just like they learn to walk and talk.

Strong visual skills are critical for learning. Around 80% of what children learn comes through their vision. Whether it’s reading, playing with friends, catching a ball, or seeing what’s written on the board, good eyesight is involved in nearly every aspect of their development.

To set them up for success, it’s crucial that their visual skills develop properly. Children with undiagnosed vision problems may struggle to keep up in school and could be mistakenly diagnosed with ADHD or another behavioral disorder.

Undiagnosed vision issues can also lead to:

  • Slower learning compared to peers
  • Behavioral and disciplinary challenges
  • A higher risk of dropping out of school
